The physical part of the OnCurating Project Space is closed until further notice in light of the current pandemic situation, as we would like to keep a safe and healthy environment for our visitors. However our online platforms and projects will still be active, so stay tuned!
Exhibitions are seen as spatial experiences, yet the encounters with people, art, and its discourse are as important as the spatial formation. Especially in today’s states of emergencies – with a current pandemic virus limiting our social contacts, and moreover with the ecological catastrophe ahead and regressive nationalistic and identitarian movements wordwide – new forms of meaningful connectivity and discussions with a wide range of participants internationaly are needed.

We have to cancel all the workshop and guided tours at the OnCurating Project Space. However the various talks and inputs will be moved to the digital with a live stream to the OnCurating Facebook page.

Talk
The exhibition assembles the politically engaged practices of artists and practices of activists, whose work is directly concerned with taking up political positions and engaging in interventions, ground work and various forms of activism. The exhibition aims to become a contact zone where different publics are invited to actively negotiate what has to be done, and in what way.
The project will take place at the OnCurating Space and elsewhere in March 2020, and will include an extensive event programme with various encounters, series of talks, lectures and discussions as way of examining these intersectionalities and sharing an expanded public space.

The presence of political discourse in contemporary art has been firmly established for decades, with its intense and important interventions. In our current political climate, where in many states and nations the raging economics of global capital and its outcomes have in many instances been followed by reactionary votes and support for age-old heteronormative and identitarian fundamentalisms, the necessity of the influence of political art and a range of voices dramatically increases. The accelerating success of populist rhetoric and increasingly concerning consequences of global warming only add urgency to the matter. It is fair to state that art and activism on their own are not enough to open up minds and affect the fundamental ground level change necessary to realise a fairer and more equal global society.
Therefore, we are inspired to use the idea of “chains of equivalence” as theorised by Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau as a starting point, in order to present positions of shared interests of activism, art practice and curating, and everything that happens in between, in a conversation about how these spheres affect the creating and reshaping of society towards justice and norms of equality, and how these respective practices negotiate their roles to have an effect in societies.
The exhibition developed for the OnCurating Project Space aims to make encounters possible without levelling off the essential differences between artistic and political activism. It simultaneously attempts to enhance a condition of plurality and display a variety of voices grounded in different realities and which claim disparate urgencies. The exhibition is designed to withstand the ensuing tension, and through juxtaposition, to create a conflict zone of the existing artistic and activist approaches in all their ambivalence, where new connections can be formulated.

Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungsprojekt zu Kunst und Aktivismus

Die Ausstellung versammelt politisch engagierte Praktiken von Künstler*innen und Praktiken von Aktivist*innen, deren Arbeit mit einer Positionierung im Politischen einhergeht und sich mit Interventionen und Formen des Aktivismus befasst. Die Ausstellung soll zu einer Kontaktzone werden, in der verschiedene Öffentlichkeiten eingeladen werden, aktiv zu verhandeln, was und wie getan werden muss.
Das Projekt wird im März 2020 im OnCurating Space und an anderen Orten stattfinden und ein umfangreiches Veranstaltungsprogramm mit verschiedenen Begegnungen, Gesprächs-, Vortrags- und Diskussionsreihen umfassen, um diese Schnittmengen zu untersuchen und einen erweiterten öffentlichen Raum zu teilen.

Die Präsenz von politischem Diskurs in der zeitgenössischen Kunst ist seit Jahrzehnten mit intensiven und wichtigen Interventionen etabliert. Im aktuellen politischen Klima, in dem in vielen Staaten die Ökonomie des globalen Kapitals und seiner Ergebnisse in vielen Fällen von reaktionären Stimmen und der Unterstützung alter heteronormativer und identitärer Fundamentalismen gefolgt ist, steigt das Bedürfnis nach politischer Kunst und Stimmenvielfalt dramatisch an. Der sich beschleunigende Erfolg populistischer Rhetorik und die zunehmende Besorgnis über die Folgen der globalen Erwärmung machen die Sache nur noch dringlicher. Man kann behaupten, dass Kunst und Aktivismus allein nicht ausreichen, grundlegende Veränderungen zu bewirken, die für die Verwirklichung einer gerechteren und gleichberechtigten globalen Gesellschaft notwendig sind.
Deshalb sind wir interessiert daran, die Idee der „Ketten der Äquivalenz“, wie von Chantal Mouffe und Ernesto Laclau beschrieben, als Ausgangspunkt zu nehmen, um Positionen gemeinsamer Interessen von Aktivismus, Kunstpraxis und Kuratieren und alles, was dazwischen geschieht, gemeinsam zu diskutieren in offenen Gesprächen, um die Gesellschaft zu mehr Gerechtigkeit und Gleichheit zu beeinflussen.
Die Ausstellung, die für den OnCurating Project Space entwickelt wurde, will Begegnungen ermöglichen, ohne die wesentlichen Unterschiede zwischen künstlerischem und politischem Aktivismus zu nivellieren. Gleichzeitig versucht sie, einen Zustand der Pluralität zu verstärken und eine Vielzahl von Stimmen zu zeigen, die in unterschiedlichen Realitäten begründet sind und unterschiedliche Dringlichkeiten beanspruchen. Die Ausstellung ist darauf ausgerichtet, die daraus resultierende Spannung auszuhalten und durch die Gegenüberstellung eine Konfliktzone der bestehenden künstlerischen und aktivistischen Ansätze mit all ihren Ambivalenzen zu schaffen, in der sich neue Verbindungen formulieren.
