Are we all here? Exploring Embodied Virtuality Today highlights the discourses around connectivity and intimacy through the use of digital tools, from the beginnings of the internet in the early 1990s to its development in the following decades. With the onset of the current circumstances set by the COVID-19 pandemic, societies are – more than ever – confronted with (self-)isolation, loss of physical contact and singularisation in an increasing shift of social interactions into digital space. Conceived in this situation, the project has taken early net artworks from the 1990s and 2000s as an opportunity to explore our today’s changed behavior of closeness, intimacy and other relations with humans and non-humans through digital means.
Are we all here? Exploring Embodied Virtuality Today seeks to revisit the onset of net art and how it evolved as a tool to question virtual connectivity and digital intimacy without offering tangible solutions. In our post-Internet world, online space is an extension of our lived reality. Via websites, blogs, friend requests, and DM’s, we leave traces of our networked existence and evidence of virtual connectivity. Uniting artworks with life experiences, the exhibition leads visitors and users to question not only whether personal connections are possible online and it what form, but also the possible ramifications of our interconnectedness. Are these connections “authentic”? How are they sustained, accessed (and by whom), and how can they be mobilised once they exist?
The three-part exhibition will be realized at the OnCurating exhibition space, on the digital platform areweallhere.net and with an accompanying program. The digital platform is not only a documentation of the exhibition on-site but extends the physical exhibition into the digital space. The digital platform will go live together with the exhibition opening, and the works shown digitally will also no longer be on view when the exhibition ends. Lectures will be added to the digital platform as they occur.
Central in the exhibition space is Eduardo Kac’s work Teleporting An Unknown State (1994/96), an early interactive biotelematic work, which will be reconceptualized for this exhibition. The installation combines a telematic presence (live-streamed webcams) with the planetary in the form of a plant that receives light only by means of the screen. Affiliated to this work, the net art work Telepresence2 (2001) on display on-site documents Corpos Informáticos performative encounter within a technological setup that uncannily resembles our current gatherings over Zoom and similar digital tools. The series of performances of Telepresence explored digital encounters with hundreds of images and sounds of remote participants across their network. A live performance by the collective will extend the on-site experience with a participatory happening through the help of online space.
Influenced by these considerations of proximity, intimacy and isolation with digital means, new works by Marc Lee, Maëlle Gross, Alexandra Pfammatter, Katrin Niedermeier, Lauren Huret, and Olga Bushkova are either shown digitally or on-site. A self-observational documentary video work of intimate choreographies conducted in a series of Zoom workshops by choreographer Be Van Vark joins the other artists works.
In addition, lectures, and lecture-performances will accompany the exhibition, held by Eduardo Kac, ACOCORÉ/Corpos Informáticos, Stefan Kaegi, Boris Magrini and Tammara Leites/Simon Senn.

Are we all here? Exploring Embodied Virtuality Today erforscht Diskurse um Konnektivität und Intimität durch den Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge, von den Anfängen des Internets in den frühen 1990er Jahren bis zu seiner Entwicklung in den folgenden Jahrzehnten. Mit dem Ausbruch der COVID-19-Pandemie sind Gesellschaften mehr denn je mit (Selbst-)Isolation, dem Verlust von physischen Kontakten und einer zunehmenden Verlagerung sozialer Interaktionen in den digitalen Raum konfrontiert. In dieser Situation hat das Projekt frühe Netzkunstwerke aus den 1990er und 2000er Jahren zum Anlass genommen, unser heutiges verändertes Verhalten in Bezug auf Nähe, Intimität und andere Beziehungen mit digitalen Mitteln zu untersuchen.
Im Zentrum des Ausstellungsraums befindet sich Eduardo Kac‘s Arbeit Teleporting An Unknown State (1994/96), eine frühe interaktive Biotelematische Arbeit, die für diese Ausstellung neu konzeptualisiert wird. Die Installation verbindet eine telematische Präsenz (live-gestreamte Webcams) mit dem Planetarischen in Form einer Pflanze, die nur durch den Bildschirm Licht empfängt. In Verbindung mit dieser Arbeit dokumentiert die ebenfalls im Raum ausgestellte Netzkunst-Arbeit Telepresence2 (2001) die performativen Begegnungen von Corpos Informáticos im digitalen Raum der 2000er Jahre, die unseren heutigen Zusammenkünften über Zoom und ähnliche digitale Tools unheimlich ähnelt. Die Performancereihe Telepresence untersuchte digitale Begegnungen mittels Hunderten von Bildern und Tönen von telematischen Teilnehmer*innen über das Netzwerk.
Beeinflusst von diesen Überlegungen zu Nähe, Intimität und Isolation mit digitalen Mitteln werden die Arbeiten von Marc Lee, Maëlle Gross, Alexandra Pfammatter, Katrin Niedermeier, Lauren Huret und Olga Bushkova entweder digital auf areweallhere.net oder vor Ort gezeigt. Eine dokumentarische Videoarbeit zur Selbstbeobachtung von intimen Choreografien, die in einer Reihe von Zoom-Workshops von der Choreografin Be Van Vark durchgeführt wurden, ergänzt die Werke der Künstler*innen.
Darüber hinaus wird die Ausstellung von Vorträgen und Lecture-Performances begleitet, die von Eduardo Kac, ACACOCORÉ/Corpos Informáticos, Stefan Kaegi, Boris Magrini und Tammara Leites/Simon Senn gehalten werden.
Die dreiteilige Ausstellung wird im Ausstellungsraum OnCurating Project Soace, auf der digitalen Plattform areweallhere.net und mit einem Begleitprogramm realisiert. Die digitale Plattform ist nicht nur eine Dokumentation der Ausstellung vor Ort, sondern erweitert die physische Ausstellung ins Digitale. Die digitale Plattform wird zusammen mit der Ausstellungseröffnung freigeschaltet, und mit dem Ende der Ausstellung werden auch die digital gezeigten Werke nicht mehr zu sehen sein. Die Gespräche und Performances werden nach und nach in die digitale Plattform eingepflegt.
