We cordially invite you to the public event with Johanna Bruckner and Stefanie Knobel, Choreographing polymorphic potentialities – ensemble affects and collective bodies, organized by the ZHdK Master of Fine Arts Student Study Group on Performance & Performativity at the OnCurating Project Space on 9 January 2019 at 18:30h.

The two artists will present their body of work engaged with performativity, technology, and choreography, where performance can be situated as an emancipatory and ecological bodied practice with feminist orientation and desires for a politics and aesthetics of equality. Their presentations will be followed by a round-table discussion with the two of them, the Student Study Group on Performance & Performativity, and the audience.
The event and discussion focus on the intersection of the works of Bruckner and Knobel, and the notion of performativity’s polymorphic potentialities to assemble affects as a mode of collectivization. On how the technological apparatuses influences the performative aspects of artistic practices and vice versa. And on how they expand to the non-human modalities of global synergies and embody our common futures.

Johanna Bruckner
Born in Vienna in 1984, Johanna Bruckner is an artist whose work is shown internationally, most recently at the Venice Biennale, 16th Architectural Exhibition (2018); Galerie EIGEN+ART Lab, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Sammlung Falckenberg (2018); Galerie Reflector Contemporary, Bern (2018); the KW, Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2017); the Migros Musem für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich (2017); the Villa Croce, Museum for Contemporary Art, Genoa (2017; the Kunsthaus in Hamburg (2016); the Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof (2016); Manifesta 11, Zurich (2016). She is now preparing a solo project for the CAC Centre Contemporain, Geneva. She has lectured at various universities and institutions including the Bauhaus University of Weimar, the Lucerne School of Art and Design, Zurich University of the Arts and the BAC Center Contemporain in Geneva. Her work was awarded numerous grants, among them the Hamburg Stipendium for Fine Arts (2016), and a scholarship for the overseas artist studio program at the Banff Center for Visual Arts in Canada in (2015); currently a fellow at the Sommerakademie Paul Klee (2017-19).
Bruckner is interested in the conditions of labour that have been emerging in response to the technologies of communicative capitalism; often working with social and political references that emerge within the ruptures and struggles of our realities. Dance and performance is significant in her work, films and video installations, in order to question the relation between subjectivities that are governed by algorithms, seeking to rearticulate (historic) knowledge and cultural-economic realities. Bruckner moreover works on the organization of collective bodies.

Stefanie Knobel
Stefanie Knobel (1983) is an artist and choreographer working with performance, writing and installation. Recent works shown at FRAC Lorraine Metz, Moscow International Biennale for Young Art, Aargauer Kunsthaus among others. In 2019/20 she has residencies in Dhaka, Bangalore and Paris.
Her work is based on bodily and linguistic practices, that alongside geopolitical dynamics, scrutinize means of production, performativity and the public sphere. Her choreographic approach is dedicated to realize life and nonlife in the different stories beyond capitalism. This expresses a material formalism like her performative breathing practice and her precise gestural layouts. Her body of work is propelled by a critical re-metaphorization and fictionalization of “human” processes such as technology, labor, pharmaceutics and investment.

Wir laden Sie herzlich zur öffentlichen Veranstaltung mit Johanna Bruckner und Stefanie Knobel, Choreographing polymorphic potentialities – ensemble affects and collective bodies, organisiert von der ZHdK Master of Fine Arts Student Study Group on Performance & Performativity im OnCurating Project Space am 9. Januar 2019 um 18:30 Uhr ein.
Die Veranstaltung wird von Samrat „Obhi“ Banerjee, Ishita Chakraborty, Dimitrina Sevova und der Student Study Group on Performance & Performativity organisiert.
Die beiden Künstlerinnen präsentieren ihr Werk, das sich mit Performativität, Technologie und Choreographie beschäftigt, wo Performance als emanzipatorische und ökologische Körperpraxis mit feministischer Ausrichtung und Wünschen nach einer Politik und Ästhetik der Gleichheit positioniert werden kann. Nach den Präsentationen findet eine Diskussionsrunde mit den beiden, der Student Study Group on Performance & Performativity und dem Publikum statt.
Die Veranstaltung und Diskussion konzentriert sich auf die Schnittmenge der Werke von Bruckner und Knobel und die Vorstellung von den polymorphen Möglichkeiten der Performativität, Affekte als Modus der Kollektivierung zusammenzuführen. Wie die technologischen Apparate die performativen Aspekte künstlerischer Praktiken beeinflussen und umgekehrt. Und wie sie sich auf die nichtmenschlichen Modalitäten globaler Synergien ausdehnen und unsere gemeinsame Zukunft verkörpern.

Johanna Bruckner
Johanna Bruckner, 1984 in Wien geboren, ist eine Künstlerin, deren Arbeiten international gezeigt werden, zuletzt auf der 16. Architekturausstellung in Venedig (2018); Galerie EIGEN+ART Lab, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Sammlung Falckenberg (2018); Galerie Reflector Contemporary, Bern (2018); die KW, Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2017); das Migros Musem für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich (2017); die Villa Croce, Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Genua (2017; das Kunsthaus in Hamburg (2016); der Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof (2016); Manifesta 11, Zürich (2016). Derzeit bereitet sie ein Soloprojekt für das CAC Centre Contemporain, Genf vor. Sie lehrte an verschiedenen Universitäten und Institutionen, darunter an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, der Hochschule für Kunst und Design Luzern, der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste und dem BAC Center Contemporain in Genf. Ihre Arbeit erhielt zahlreiche Stipendien, darunter das Hamburger Stipendium für Bildende Kunst (2016) und ein Stipendium für das Auslandsstudio-Programm am Banff Center for Visual Arts in Kanada (2015); derzeit Stipendiat an der Sommerakademie Paul Klee (2017-19).
Bruckner interessiert sich für die Arbeitsbedingungen, die sich als Reaktion auf die Technologien des kommunikativen Kapitalismus herausgebildet haben; er arbeitet oft mit sozialen und politischen Referenzen, die sich in den Brüchen und Kämpfen unserer Realitäten ergeben. Tanz und Performance sind in ihren Arbeiten, Filmen und Videoinstallationen von Bedeutung, um das Verhältnis zwischen Subjektivitäten zu hinterfragen, die von Algorithmen regiert werden und die versuchen, (historisches) Wissen und kulturell-ökonomische Realitäten neu zu formulieren. Darüber hinaus beschäftigt sich Bruckner mit der Organisation von Kollektivorganen.

Stefanie Knobel
Stefanie Knobel (1983) ist Künstlerin und Choreographin und arbeitet mit Performance, Schreiben und Installation. Jüngste Arbeiten, die unter anderem im FRAC Lorraine Metz, der Moskauer Internationalen Biennale für junge Kunst und im Aargauer Kunsthaus gezeigt wurden. In den Jahren 2019/20 hat sie Aufenthalte in Dhaka, Bangalore und Paris.
Ihre Arbeit basiert auf körperlichen und sprachlichen Praktiken, die neben der geopolitischen Dynamik Produktionsmittel, Performativität und Öffentlichkeit hinterfragen. Ihr choreografischer Ansatz ist der Verwirklichung von Leben und Nichtleben in den verschiedenen Geschichten jenseits des Kapitalismus gewidmet. Dies drückt einen materiellen Formalismus wie ihre performative Atemübung und ihre präzise gestische Gestaltung aus. Ihr Werk wird von einer kritischen Remetaphorisierung und Fiktionalisierung „menschlicher“ Prozesse wie Technologie, Arbeit, Pharmazie und Investitionen angetrieben.
