If the curator is the new artist, the curatorial concept delivers the actual work of art and the participating artists only illustrative material – then some things become questionable. What about the much-vaunted autonomy of artists and works of art? What is the relationship of power between curators and artists? Which ethos shapes the work of curators and / or artists? Who wants to be an artist, who wants to become a curator and why?
„I wish I was a curator“ – a desire full of ambiguities and ambivalences, an individual fantasy and in this exhibition of the same name with a double twist: future curators as producers, the artist as curator. Is this just another volte in the metacarousel of art? Or does the desire not rather testify to an existential desirability of art – for everyone who is dedicated to it?
Dirk Reimes, born 1976 in Schopfheim in the Black Forest. After studying advertising and marketing communication he worked as Creative Director. Since 2012 he studies Fine Arts with Christian Jankowski at the State Academy of Fine Arts, Stuttgart. Numerous exhibitions in Germany, France and Switzerland. Recently, 2017, solo exhibition at the Kunstverein Oberwelt in Stuttgart. Dirk Reimes lives and works in Stuttgart.
Wenn der Kurator der neue Künstler ist, das kuratorische Konzept das eigentliche Kunstwerk und die beteiligten Künstler nur noch illustratives Material liefern – dann wird so manches fragwürdig. Wie steht es um die viel beschworene Autonomie von KünstlerInnen und Kunstwerken? In welchem (Macht)Verhältnis stehen KuratorInnen und KünstlerInnen zueinander? Welcher Ethos prägt die Arbeit von KuratorInnen und / mit Künstlern? Wer will KünstlerIn, wer KuratorIn werden und warum?
„I wish I was a curator“ – ein Wunsch voller Mehrdeutigkeiten und Ambivalenzen, eine individuelle Fantasie und in dieser gleichnamigen Ausstellung mit einem doppelten Twist: angehende KuratorInnen als Produzenten, der Künstler als Kurator. Ist das nur eine weitere Volte im Metakarussell der Kunst? Oder zeugt der Wunsch nicht vielmehr von einer existentiellen Begehrlichkeit der Kunst – für jeden der sich ihr verschreibt?
Dirk Reimes, geboren 1976 in Schopfheim im Schwarzwald. Nach dem Studium der Werbung und Marktkommunikation Tätigkeit als Creative Director. Seit 2012 Studium der Bildenden Kunst bei Christian Jankowski an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. Zahlreiche Ausstellungsbeteiligungen, u.a. in Deutschland, Frankreich und der Schweiz. Zuletzt, 2017, Einzelausstellung im Kunstverein Oberwelt in Stuttgart. Dirk Reimes lebt und arbeitet in Stuttgart.
