Aufgrund ihrer hohen Reproduzierbarkeit, kreativen Kontextverschiebungen, ihrer nachvollziehbaren Bezüge und ihres kritischen Potenzials sind Internet-Memes zu einem weit verbreiteten Medium des politischen Ausdrucks und – manchmal – zu einem Mittel des Protests geworden. Ein gutes Meme verbreitet sich sehr schnell und es ist unmöglich, es wieder zu löschen, was es zu einer regelmäßig genutzten Technik zur Verbreitung von Informationen und zum Ausdruck von Forderungen während der jüngsten Proteste in den USA, Russland, Hongkong oder Myanmar machte.
Während dieses Workshops werden wir uns mit einer kurzen Geschichte von Memen für den Protest beschäftigen und Meme produzieren, die während des Protests zu RECLAIM CULTURAL SURPLUS
am 8. Mai und während der gesamten Ausstellung im On Curating Project Space verwendet werden.
14 Uhr vor dem Kunsthaus Zürich, Start des Marsches: 14.30 Uhr, Endpunkt: 15 Uhr Brücke vor dem Rathaus.
Bitte mit Masken kommen! Wir achten auf entsprechenden Abstand.

Wir rufen internationale und lokale Kulturschaffende auf, sich an Protesten zu beteiligen! Kunst ist ein wichtiges Regulativ der Zivilgesellschaft! Kunst ist systemrelevant!
Lange Zeit war es ruhig um die Zürcher Kunstszene, wenn man bedenkt, dass zahlreiche Initiativen, Projekte und Off-Spaces von Zürcher Kulturschaffenden, Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen dramatisch unterfinanziert sind. Es ist genau das eingetreten, was Gregory Sholette mit dem Begriff „Dark Matter“ beschreibt: Die Künstler*innen und Kulturschaffenden tragen alle dazu bei, dass es in Zürich eine attraktive Kulturszene gibt. Und dennoch profitieren nur wenige von der lebendigen Szene: die Tourismusindustrie, die großen Galerien und die Art Basel, aber auch einzelne Künstler(*innen), die dann gelegentlich hohe Preise erzielen. Aber erst durch die Arbeit und das Engagement vieler entsteht diese „dunkle Materie“, die vielfältige Kunstszene.
Wir wünschen uns daher, dass diese Gewinne wieder in die gesamte vielfältige Szene zurückfließen, in Form einer großzügigen Projektförderung, in Form von Honoraren für Künstler*innen, Kurator*innen und Kulturschaffende, in Form einer angemessenen und ausreichenden Finanzierung von Off-Räumen und Initiativen.
- Wir wollen, dass das Kunstdepartment endlich den eigenen Vorgaben folgt!
- Wir wollen eine vielfältige Kulturszene. Wir wollen Diversität, nicht als Lippenbekenntnis, sondern auf allen Ebenen umgesetzt!
- Wir wollen experimentelle Kunst, wir wollen Kunst, die Hand in Hand mit sozialen Bewegungen geht!
- Wir wollen mehr Förderung für Künstlerinnen und Kuratorinnen!
- Wir wollen neue Verteilschlüssel (die aktuelle Verteilschlüssel) der finanziellen Mittel umkehren: neu 80 % an die freie Szene, die restlichen 20% können sich Kunsthaus und ein oder zwei Institutionen teilen.
- Wir wollen eine detaillierte Aufstellung des finanziellen Ist-Zustandes und der Verantwortlichkeiten!
- Wir wollen, dass Gleichstellung in allen Institutionen erreicht wird, nicht nur der Künstler*innen und Nicht-Weissen Künstler*innen, sondern auch bei den Kurator*innen, dem Board und den Angeboten für das Publikum.
- Wir fordern einen konkreten Plan wie diese Ziele umgesetzt werden!

Between good old internet mockery and online activism, the anonymous Instagram account Zürich Art Memes is using the format of memes to expose the vices and vanities of the Zurich art scene and oftentimes get quite political. Why Instagram, why memes and what can they do and how to use social media for critiquing purposes – join for the event on 7 May at 19:00. The material produced during the workshop will be part of the protest and the exhibition Reclaim Cultural Surplus.
Important: the identity of the speaker will be kept undisclosed during the event.

Because of their high reproducibility, creative use of context, relatable references and critical potential – Internet memes have become a wide-spread medium of political expression and – at times – a means of protest. A good meme spreads very fast and it is impossible to take it down, making it a regularly used technique for spreading information and expressing demands during the recent protests in the USA, Russia, Hong Kong or Myanmar. During this workshop we will look into a brief history of memes for protest and produce memes that will be used during the protest to RECLAIM CULTURAL SURPLUS on 8 May and throughout the exhibition in the On Curating Project Space.

We call on international and local cultural practitioners to join the protests!
Art is an important regulator in the civil society! Art is systemically relevant!
It has been too long quiet in the Zurich art scene, considering that numerous initiatives, projects and off-spaces of Zurich’s cultural workers, artists and curators are dramatically underfunded. Exactly what Gregory Sholette describes with the term „dark matter“ has occurred: The artists and cultural workers all contribute to the fact that there is an attractive cultural scene in Zurich. And yet only a few profit from the lively scene: the tourism industry, some large galleries and Art Basel, as well as individual artists who occasionally achieve high prices. But it is only through the work and commitment of many that this „dark matter“, the diverse art scene, exists.
We, therefore want these profits to flow back into the entire diverse scene, in the form of generous project funding and fees for artists, curators and cultural workers, as well as, adequate and sufficient funding for off-spaces and initiatives.
– We want the art department to finally follow its own guidelines!
– We want a diverse cultural scene. We want diversity, not merely as lip service, but implemented at all levels!
– We want experimental art, we want art that goes hand-in-hand with social movements!
– We want more funding for women artists and curators!
– We want the flip the present financing formula: new 80% for the independent scene with the remaining 20% to be shared between Kunsthaus and one or two other institutions.
– We want a detailed report on the current financials and those administrating!
– We want diversity in all institutions, not only for artists and artists of color, in respect to the curators, executive boards and exhibition programs.
– We also demand a concrete plan describing how these goals should be achieved!
