Silvan Kälin: Homo Viator is a solo exhibition of the Swiss artist that brings together two new artworks and a selection of artistic publication. In the documentary video installation „Lá e cá“ [There and Here] the artist presents a research in process with statements from foreigners about their living in different realities, where Brazil can mean there, and Europe here, or vice versa. The pencil drawn animation „Goes and Goes On“ raises up imaginative aspects of a being that never ceases its movement, that always goes forward through different steps and paces and accordingly to rhythms. The exhibition constellation specifies aspects of a dismantled geography and the difficulties to put the feet on solid ground.
Two events accompany the show: a public conversation with the artist and the Brazilian curator Giovanna Bragaglia and a live drums performance to the animation by the Swiss musician Christian Bucher who also collaborated with Kälin for the soundtrack.
Silvan Kälin (b. 1981, Lucerne), Bachelor in Fine Arts (2006, FHNW Basel), studying in Master of Art Education at ZHdK. Arrived in Brazil, Lagoa do Ouro – PE, in 2007 as a civil-servant, developing a pedagogic-artistic project for the Swiss NGO Nordesta (Geneva). Since 2008, in Recife, has been intermittent resident at the artist studio A Casa Como Convém. He continued to work and lived between 2012-2017 in Recife as artist and co-founder of the publisher house Editora–Aplicação. His works revolve around practices in drawing, illustration, animation, video, printing and sculpture. Kälin has presented his work in solo exhibitions in Recife (2017) and in Basel (2011) and has participated in group shows as “New Buenos Aires”, at Corner College, in Zürich (2016); “Fotos contam fatos”, at Galeria Vermelho, in São Paulo (2015); “Compulsão Narrativa”, at Sesc Vila Mariana, in São Paulo (2014) and “Microclima”, at Kunsthalle Zürich (2012), among others.

Silvan Kälin: Homo Viator ist eine Einzelausstellung des Schweizer Künstlers, die zwei neue Arbeiten und eine Auswahl von Künstlerpublikationen vereint. In der dokumentarischen Videoinstallation „Lá e cá“ [Dort und Hier] präsentiert der Künstler eine im Prozess befindende Recherche mit Aussagen übers Fremd sein und das Leben in verschiedenen Realitäten, wo Brasilien da bedeuten kann, und Europa hier oder umgekehrt. Die Zeichentrick animation „Goes and Goes On“ entwirft ein imaginäres Wesen in unaufhörlicher Bewegung, welches unterschiedlich vorwärtsschreitend, schritthaltend, dem Rhythmus folgt.
Zwei Veranstaltungen begleiten die Show: ein öffentliches Gespräch mit dem Künstler und der brasilianischen Kuratorin Giovanna Bragaglia sowie eine Schlagzeug Performance und Live-Vertonung zur Zeichentrick animation durch den Schweizer Musiker Christian Bucher, welcher auch schon für den Soundtrack mit Kälin zusammenarbeitete.
Silvan Kälin (geb. 1981, Luzern), Bachelor in Bildender Kunst (2006, FHNW Basel), Studium in Master of Art Education an der ZHdK. Angekommen in Brasilien, Lagoa do Ouro – PE, 2007 als Zivildienstleistender, entwickelte ein pädagogisch-künstlerisches Projekt für die Schweizer NGO Nordesta (Genf); seit 2008 zeitweilig resident im Künstleratelier „A Casa Como Convém“ in Recife; lebt und arbeitet zwischen 2012-2017 in Recife als Künstler und Mitbegründer des Verlages Editora-Aplicação.
Seine Arbeiten umfassen Praktiken der Zeichnung, Illustration, Animation, Video, Druck und Skulptur. Kälin präsentierte seine Arbeiten in Einzelausstellungen in Recife (2017) und in Basel (2011) und in Gruppenausstellungen wie „New Buenos Aires“, am Corner College, in Zürich (2016); „Fotos contam fatos“, in der Galeria Vermelho, in São Paulo (2015); „Compulsão Narrativa“, in Sesc Vila Mariana, in São Paulo (2014) und „Microclima“, in der Kunsthalle Zürich (2012), unter anderen.
