is a video piece that presents two simultaneous views: one turning into the artist’s studio, and the other looking out from the studio to the corridor and entrance hall leading into it. The video opens with the artist lying on a bed in the middle of the studio, weakly calling the emergency medical service, Magen David Adom. Soon a team of paramedics arrives, who question the artist and apply first aid. Natour addresses the switchboard operator in English and uses this language in the conversation with the paramedics who come to his assistance. The choice of this language liberates him from choosing one of the two immediate languages relevant to his identity as an Arab-Israeli artist: Hebrew and Arabic.

About the artist:
Karam Natour explores the dynamics of power structures within society. Natour, a young Israeli-Palestinian artist and professor at the Academy of Art and Design in Bezalel, mainly works with video—a medium which allows him to maintain an ironic and playful stance in his practice, which often involves himself and his family.

ist eine Videoarbeit, die zwei simultane Ansichten präsentiert: eine, die sich in das Atelier des Künstlers wendet, und die andere, die aus dem Atelier heraus auf den Korridor und die Eingangshalle blickt, die in das Atelier führen. Das Video beginnt mit dem Künstler, der auf einem Bett in der Mitte des Ateliers liegt und schwach den medizinischen Notfalldienst Magen David Adom ruft. Bald trifft ein Team von Sanitätern ein, die den Künstler befragen und erste Hilfe leisten. Natour spricht die Telefonistin auf Englisch an und nutzt diese Sprache auch im Gespräch mit den Sanitätern, die ihm zu Hilfe kommen. Die Wahl dieser Sprache befreit ihn von der Wahl einer der beiden unmittelbaren Sprachen, die für seine Identität als arabisch-israelischer Künstler relevant sind: Hebräisch und Arabisch.

Karam Natour erforscht die Dynamik von Machtstrukturen innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Natour, ein junger israelisch-palästinensischer Künstler und Professor an der Akademie für Kunst und Design in Bezalel, arbeitet hauptsächlich mit Video – ein Medium, das es ihm erlaubt, eine ironische und spielerische Haltung in seiner Praxis beizubehalten, die oft ihn selbst und seine Familie einbezieht.
