Extraordinary Mineral Stories is a reading with projection, a narrative chain of facts and fictions in which minerals are protagonists. The work also connects stories of three Swiss men (and one female mountain) through archival documents, in a journey that goes from human to extraterrestrial geography.
Additionally to the reading, we will open an exhibition of StoneStatements Editions [1], a project that takes the form of an editorial concept. StoneStatements Editions is a “geomediator” allowing stones and rocks to be seen as components of Earth’s life, belonging to life system. A proposal to transform the way they are too often seen as objects of extraction, by working vocabularies and collectively learning, in the urgency for considering the world beyond the duality of life and non-life, sharing a debate: how to differently relate to minerals?
Mabe Bethônico, is an artist researcher with a PhD from the Royal College of Art, London. She has been professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, between 2002 and 2020. She currently teaches at HEAD – Genève. Environmental and pedagogical issues are at the core of her artistic endeavor, making the implications of the mining industry the main issue of her work, along with questions developed in the frame of institutions and archives. She participated in 2021 of the 17th Architecture Biennial. She has shown in the 27th and 28th São Paulo Biennials and at the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, the Antioquia Museum in Medellín, at the Kunstverein Munich, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Musée d’Art Moderne de Lyon, Malba in Buenos Aires, amongst others.
[1] StoneStatements editions has launched four titles of books imagined, wished or suggested to be developed, yet to be written. Their covers carry relevant questions to be further elaborated and debated about human relation to rocks: they are book covers-posters-manifests. A fifth book has been written in collaboration with 26 authors, – Missing Words for Considering Stones, Rocks, Pebbles and Mountains: A Vocabulary of Proximity, – available for free download.

Extraordinary Mineral Stories ist eine Lesung mit Projektion, eine narrative Kette von Fakten und Fiktionen, in der Mineralien die Protagonist*innen sind. Die Arbeit verbindet die Geschichten dreier Schweizer Männer (und einem weiblichen Berg) durch Archivdokumente zu einer Reise, die von der menschlichen zur außerirdischen Geographie führt.
Zusätzlich zur Lesung eröffnen wir eine Ausstellung von StoneStatements Editions [1], einem Projekt, das die Form eines redaktionellen Konzepts hat. StoneStatements Editions ist ein „Geomediator“, der es ermöglicht, Steine und Felsen als Bestandteile des Lebens auf der Erde zu betrachten, die zum Lebenssystem gehören. Ein Vorschlag, um die Art und Weise zu verändern, in der sie allzu oft als Objekte der Extraktion gesehen werden, indem wir Vokabeln erarbeiten und gemeinsam lernen, die Welt jenseits der Dualität von Leben und Nicht-Leben zu betrachten, indem wir eine Debatte führen: Wie kann man sich anders zu Mineralien verhalten?
Mabe Bethônico ist Künstlerin und Forscherin mit einem Doktortitel des Royal College of Art, London. Von 2002 bis 2020 war sie Professorin an der Bundesuniversität von Minas Gerais, Brasilien. Derzeit unterrichtet sie an der HEAD – Genève. Umwelt- und pädagogische Fragen stehen im Mittelpunkt ihres künstlerischen Schaffens, wobei die Auswirkungen der Bergbauindustrie das Hauptthema ihrer Arbeit sind, ebenso wie Fragen, die im Rahmen von Institutionen und Archiven entwickelt wurden. Sie nahm 2021 an der 17. Architekturbiennale teil. São Paulo Biennale teil und stellte unter anderem im Museum für Moderne Kunst in São Paulo, im Antioquia Museum in Medellín, im Kunstverein München, im Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, im Musée d’Art Moderne de Lyon und im Malba in Buenos Aires aus.
