An Ode to Adulting is a contemplation of adulthood, within and against a myriad of backdrops. Adulthood/adulting is observed through films whose stories draw on the poetry of coming of age, “being of age”, and a latter part of agehood where often, it seems, a realization of failure and/or misguidedness in the performance of adult are had.
The title adult, for humans, is awarded not only for physical growth, but is highly attributed to the expectations laid out for the physically grown human being. Expectations emanating from both the individual and its society. The weight of these expectations often playing a significant role in the responses the adult has to life. These are not always directly communicated but through the performance of the ready adulting adults in a society, the one moving towards that position uses these performances as mode of example to emulate, once they themselves assume the adult role.

As part of the weekend program for the film exhibition An Ode to Adulting, show curator Abongile Willi will host German based director Daniela Lucato as she shares her practice and creating during lockdown.
Daniela Lucato started playing theatre in Padua (Italy) parallel to her studies at the university. After her degree in Philosophy she moved to Rome, Wellington and finally Berlin where she works as an actress/filmmaker. The Birthday (2014), her first short film written/directed in mandarin/english language, has been officially selected from 25 international festivals (among these Micgenero, Frameline, ShanghaiPride where the film was also nominated for the best cinematography). In 2015 she founded Connecting Fingers Company. Her last productions for theatre are Connecting Fingers, The Wheel, The rebellious Body. Her last films When I dance (2016), The Wheel (2017) are screening on international film festivals. For the time being (2018) received the award as best international short film at DUAF/ Tribeca Film Center. In 2019 she wrote/directed the experimental short film Vieni and in (2020) the narrative short Mamma dorme (Mommy’s sleeping). During Covid-19 she wrote/performed/directed the short film My name is Sami.

An Ode to Adulting ist eine Betrachtung des Erwachsenseins, innerhalb und vor einer Vielzahl von Kulissen. Das Erwachsensein wird durch Filme beobachtet, deren Geschichten sich auf die Poesie des Erwachsenwerdens, des „Volljährig-Seins“ und des letzten Teils des Erwachsenseins stützen, in dem oft, so scheint es, eine Erkenntnis des Scheiterns und/oder der Fehlleitung bei der Ausübung des Erwachsenseins zu verzeichnen ist.
Der Titel Erwachsener wird dem Menschen nicht nur für sein körperliches Wachstum verliehen, sondern ist in hohem Maße mit den Erwartungen verknüpft, die an den körperlich erwachsenen Menschen gestellt werden. Erwartungen, die sowohl vom Individuum als auch von seiner Gesellschaft ausgehen. Das Gewicht dieser Erwartungen spielt oft eine bedeutende Rolle bei den Reaktionen des Erwachsenen auf das Leben. Diese werden nicht immer direkt kommuniziert, sondern durch die Leistungen der fertigen Erwachsenen in einer Gesellschaft. Derjenige, der sich auf diese Position zubewegt, nutzt diese Leistungen als Vorbild, dem er nacheifern kann, sobald er selbst die Erwachsenenrolle übernimmt.

Als Teil des Wochenendprogramms für die Filmausstellung An Ode to Adulting wird die Kuratorin der Ausstellung, Abongile Willi, die in Deutschland lebende Regisseurin Daniela Lucato zu Gast haben, um mit ihr über ihre Praxis und ihr Schaffen während des Lockdowns zu sprechen.
Daniela Lucato begann parallel zu ihrem Studium an der Universität in Padua (Italien) Theater zu spielen. Nach ihrem Abschluss in Philosophie zog sie nach Rom, Wellington und schließlich nach Berlin, wo sie als Schauspielerin/Filmemacherin arbeitet. The Birthday (2014), ihr erster Kurzfilm, den sie in Mandarin/Englisch geschrieben/regiert hat, wurde offiziell von 25 internationalen Festivals ausgewählt (darunter Micgenero, Frameline, ShanghaiPride, wo der Film auch für die beste Cinematographie nominiert wurde). Im Jahr 2015 gründete sie die Connecting Fingers Company. Ihre letzten Produktionen für das Theater sind Connecting Fingers, The Wheel, The rebellious Body. Ihre letzten Filme When I dance (2016), The Wheel (2017) werden auf internationalen Filmfestivals gezeigt. Vorläufig (2018) erhielt den Preis als bester internationaler Kurzfilm beim DUAF/ Tribeca Film Center. In 2019 schrieb/regierte sie den experimentellen Kurzfilm Vieni und in (2020) den narrativen Kurzfilm Mamma dorme (Mommy’s sleeping). Während Covid-19 schrieb/performte/regierte sie den Kurzfilm My name is Sami.
